Mystery tap leaves other plumbers baffled!

True story: Tuesday, 02 February 2022 - Ange interviewed Ben Dunstone about the fascinating come-abouts of this seemingly random piece of junk, displayed on our shed walls;

“…(an) old laundry trough in-wall breach” “It's basically designed so that water can only flow through them one-way - to push the tap washer up when you turn it on,” this allows different water temperatures to meet and mix in the center;” “in this case it was the jumper valve, not a tap washer.”

In other words: Two taps on either side of where the spout comes out. Hot and cold taps allow water to mix in the middle to create warm water, which flows out of an “outlet”/spout into the sink. The photo depicts an in-wall breach.

At first, this didn’t make much sense to us regular folk, so Ben sketched up a diagram - Ange has edited this diagram to help explain… *see diagram A & B.

Ben continues “So if they’ve (the manufacturer) put on the breach back-to-front, the water pressure actually closes the tap washer and doesn’t let the water through to the outlet.

This particular breach was in an old weatherboard house, multiple plumbers and people have had a go at it in the past and over the years to try and get the hot water to come through! And nobody had ever worked out, or looked at it properly, or had the knowledge and experience, to know that the tap fitting was around the wrong way!

It’s not the plumber’s fault that installed it, but obviously the plumber that installed it was unable to work it out 50-60 years ago. …and Dunstone Bros managed to figure it out all these years later. Our customer was shocked to find the problem was so simple, and very impressed at our expert plumber’s knowledge.

Ever wondered what an RPZ backflow test is? 💧 An RPZ valve stops contaminated water from flowing back into the clean water supply, especially in properties with higher risk like commercial sites or irrigation systems. Plumbers test these valves yearly to make sure they’re working properly and keeping your water safe. It’s also a legal requirement to submit the results to your local water authority, helping protect the entire community’s water supply. If your property has an RPZ, staying on top of annual testing isn’t just compliance... it’s peace of mind. ✔️ - Dunstone Bros Plumbing & Roofing (03) 5446 1535

Ever wondered what those little outdoor drains/grates are for? When a plumber says “O.R.G”, they’re talking about the Overflow Relief Gully . Its job is to act like a safety drain outside your house, so if the main sewer ever blocks up or overflows, the wastewater spills out there instead of backing up inside your home. A storm water drain is for rain water only. No question is a silly question. If you're not sure if you need a plumber for an issue you're having, just ask!
